PHHS Engineering Academy
The Patrick Henry High School Engineering Academy is an official National Academy Foundation (www.naf.org) Engineering Academy and our first official Academy year began September, 2008. We have an active advisory board consisting of representatives from area companies including Rick Engineering, Murray Lampert Construction, Qualcomm, NFCEA, SeaWorld San Diego, Raytheon, Project Lead the Way, SDCS, McConnell, Inc., American Society of Landscape Architects, GeoCad, Mesa College Engineering, Cubic Corporation, General Atomics, American Public Works Association and Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.
It took a couple years, but we were able to bring the ACE Mentoring program to PHHS!!! Special thanks to Larry Hinkle, San Diego State University Department of Engineering - who made it possible for me bring this wonderful program to PHHS! ACE Mentoring is an after school program where students work with professional architects, engineers, and representatives from the construction industry on a specialized building project. Our lead mentor is University Mechanical and they have really built our program - we have approximately 10 mentors and approximately 25 students attending the program. During the first meeting, students worked in teams to build playing card structures, self-supporting, within a few minutes. During the second meeting, students learned how to use Revit Architecture building design software to design houses.
ACE Mentoring students worked on their special project from January through May. They designed a new auditorium for PHHS. Students presented the details of their project on May 20, 2009 at the annual ACE Awards Banquet held at the Westin Horton Plaza. At this event, several PHHS students won scholarships including one of our students who won a $25,000 scholarship to NewSchool of Architecture and Design.
Also as a result of their participation in ACE mentoring, two PHHS students were offered paid summer internships at University Mechanical where they will be able to increase their learning. Congratulations Cree and Chris!!!

The students then proceeded to Superior Court where they sat in on a court proceeding. Students then had lunch with attorneys and judges. In the second part of the job shadow, students were matched with attorneys whom they shadow on a one-to-one basis at a later date. In Education!
A huge thanks to PHHS Partners in Education! San Diego State University Department of Geography invited the PHHS GIS class to SDSU on May 2, 2008. Dr. Tsou talked to students about GIS at SDSU and then the students participated in an activity similar to a scavenger hunt using GIS equipment. It was a great day for the students who also received a guided tour of the SDSU campus. Dr. Tsou will be coming to the GIS class in mid-November to talk with students again and show them some interesting things on GIS!
Rick Engineering has been actively participating on the PHHS Engineering and Design Academy Advisory Board. Rick Engineering sends 2-3 employees to each Advisory Board meeting and has helped tremendously in shaping our Academy. Kiwanis Club of Grantville-Allied Gardens continues to honor a PHHS student each month as "Student of the Month" in a special ceremony at the Kiwanis meeting. The Mission Valley Rotary Club has completed interviewing PHHS freshmen for their scholarship program. This program identifies talented freshmen and the follows their progress through their senior year and graduation. They must maintain a satisfactory GPA and citizenship throughout their 4 years at PHHS and then the Rotary awards them a scholarship. The San Carlos Library has been keeping PHHS students apprised of their activities for high school students.
Special thanks to our PHHS partner the US Navy who provided PHHS staff with the incredible opportunity to view the Miramar Air Show in the Navy Chalet on the tarmack at the air show! 10 staff members and their families/friends went to the air show and had a wonderful time!
San Diego Mesa College Physics and Engineering departments and the City of San Diego Engineering and Capital Projects have already committed to be exhibitors in the 4th PHHS Engineering, Math and Science Career Exploration Fair here at PHHS on March 4, 2009! Both Mesa College and the City were involved in the career exploration fair last March and had exciting displays which the students enjoyed!
Murray Lampert Construction (Gregg and Lisa Cantor) spearheaded the PHHS 40th Anniversary celebration event which occurred on 10/3/08 on the QUAD. This was a wonderful event which drew a huge crowd, thanks to the coordination of the event by Lisa Cantor. Murray Lampert also provided generous donations to approximately 20 PHHS clubs! Thank you so much, Murray Lampert for all you do for Patrick Henry Hig School students and staff!
